The scoop on Break-Fast!

As we all know, breakfast is the most important meal of the day! But with breakfast comes a million different questions! Is breakfast necessary? What should I eat? Should I have carbs? Should I not have carbs? Should I have fruit? Is coffee considered breakfast? If I am not hungry in the morning should I eat anyway? Is a protein shake a good breakfast? Is a protein bar breakfast? Is dry cereal a good breakfast? Should I eat proteins or fats for breakfast? What is going to keep me full until lunch?... and the questions just continue, on and on into eternity!

For the sake of keeping this blog post short, I will answer 2 of these questions. "Is breakfast necessary?" The answer everyone, is YES! Breakfast literally means 'break the fast'. Hopefully, when you wake up in the morning you have been sleeping soundly for roughly 8 hours and have thus, not been eating. As you begin to rise and move around in the morning your body begins to produce hormones to wake you up and get you ready to tackle the day! One of these hormones triggers sensors in your brain to tell you that you are hungry and need nutrients in order to be successful and productive! Many times, people ignore these signals or suppress them with coffee, tea, harmful appetite suppressants or prescription medications. This is what tricks the body, and the person, into thinking they are simply "not a breakfast person". If you are one of these people, try this! Wake up, stretch, yawn, and drink 8-16 ounces of ice cold water. You will be very surprised how this simple change may have a exceptional impact on your morning routine. Not only will it jump start your metabolism, and help you to feel hunger, it may even help you have a morning bowel movement and keep you regular!

And to answer the question "What should I eat?" Eat, FOOD. I know, it is a crazy concept, but it is an aspect of our society that continues to get overlooked more and more. Eat, food. If you are asking yourself, 'what does she mean by food?'... than our food industry owes you a HUGE apology. In laments terms, food is the stuff that doesn't have a label. Food comes from natural, holistic, organic sources, also known as the outdoors. Put things in your mouth that comes from the earth and not from a factory somewhere in the middle of nowhere. If you take this advice, a lot of other questions about breakfast come to light. No, a protein bar, packed full of processed sugars, manufactured fats, and ingredients that no one can pronounce is not breakfast. Eat, food. Nor is a protein shake with its synthetic gums, gelling agents, stripped proteins and artificial sweeteners. If it does not come out of a wrapper, if it is a color found in nature and was not concocted in a lab, and if it can ripen or be cooked, it is most likely 'breakfast'. Apply these concepts to all of your meals and you will be in beautiful shape!
